And thank you for the kind words, but it's not my story as much as it was my grandparents'. My grandfather was a KMT (Chinese Nationalist) soldier who fought Japan in WW2 and then the CCP in the Chinese Civil War before being driven out of the country by the victorious Communists, while my grandmother was from a merchant family that would've lost their property and their lives taken if they stuck around after Mao won.
Unsurprisingly neither of them were fans of the red specter when it showed its face in their place of exile, and helped out where they could to ensure the same fate that befell China didn't strike down Indonesia too. To paraphrase Captain America, the first country the Chicoms invaded was their own, after all.
Sadly, the KMT is now pro-communist. They've gone from "we are China!" to "we must retake the mainland!" to, now, "we must reunify with the mainland (and hope the CCP will give us back the power we lost over Taiwan as the only approved uniparty in Taipei SAR)."
And even worse, the KMT pretty much totally runs Taiwan's military. I fully expect them to pull a Ukraine if/when China finally does try to invade, and just hand over their fleet and their warplanes to China while all the "we want freedom!" people look on with their mouths dropping open in shock.
Indeed, it's very disappointing, they definitely aren't the same generation that led my grandfather and millions like him in China's pre-Cultural Revolution darkest hour. Here's hoping the Taiwanese patriots can dig the KMT out of the Taiwanese military and police while they still have time, if nothing else the last election proved they have the support of the people to do so after all.
God bless you. Thank you for your story. o7
