I did not, but I am sure K-9s sniffing for IEDs had an SOP, I would refer to that and their experience. Have you served in those units or are you just generally saying "I am right"?
I have experience serving in units employing K9s, yes. In a tracking role, not IED, so no opinion on the latter.
It's simply a question of balance between safety for the dog, safety for the people around you, concentrating on the task and time to deploy your weapon if needed.
Having the dog get flagged from time to time by a safe and slung weapon is an acceptable compromise.
