The argument I've heard is this: "Well, those are the HEALTHY people protesting, but now you want all the sick people to get out with the healthy people and vote. Are you crazy?!"
I tell them to wear their masks and they'll be fine.
Absentee ballots have existed for years (first introduced in the Civil War and then adopted by all states for people unable to reach polling stations by 1911) for people who are unable to make it to their polling stations. This is what should be used if you are sick, or even afraid to go vote in person.
BTW, this is the method of voting by mail that the president has always said is secure and should be used. The fact that they are trying to change the way people vote two months before the election by introducing a new element just shows that they want the voting to be fucked up as much as possible so they can contest the results.
