I was born in the 80s. My parents controlled what I could/could not watch. The only thing that has changed is that EVERYONE has gotten lazier and expect the media to cater to their needs instead of being a fucking parent.
Exploiting children is far different than having something kids can possibly access because mommy and daddy would rather spend more money than they should, so they have to work more, leaving the kids to consume media that should be under the control of the parents.
It's not a popular answer, but yes, Parents need to do the hard, exhausting work of making sure their kids are safe from this shit. If that means not having any TV or Internet in the house, so fucking be it. It's how my parents did things. Sure, I got crafty. Even learned how to hook up a phone jack to a stripped connection to download SNES games (don't steal, kids!) and use a spiral notebook and a SNES AC adaptor to make a makeshift TV antenna for the 12 inch TV I had hidden in the back of my closet in highschool. But by then it was pretty obvious to me that the fucked up degenerates around me were fucked up degenerates because when they were 7 years old their parents let them see all kinds of shit that I, now at 16, felt was still pretty racy for my age.
Nah, do "steal" kids. The Internet was so much freer of a place when people just downloaded ROMs and could watch anything online. Those companies made money on the product decades ago: at this point, I feel it is more important something get preserved for posterity.
At least do what I did and use a "Are they making and selling new copies?" test. Like, if it was something NEW that I just couldn't get my hands on (Chrono Trigger) I eventually bought plenty of copies of that to make up for the original 14 times I beat that game on an emulator.
But as for things that you can only get used, where you can't support the creators directly, that's a different story.
Recently a dedicated group of fans translated and localized "The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero," after like 20 years of it releasing in Japan. This is the 4th game in a series that's 9 games long, released, so far, and until now all we could do in the West was play the first three-game story arc, skip the two-game arc that they lead directly into, and then start the four-game Cold Steel story arc that happens simultaneously to trails from zero and trails to azure. Now sure, I COULD have found a copy to pirate online. Instead, I bought a new boxed copy straight from Falcom, the company that made it, and had it shipped over from Japan. For the NEXT installment, somehow there was only a PC version released in CHYNA, of all places, and if I bought that, I'd be giving American Moneys to a CHYNESE company, and that money would go to the Chinese Communist Party, either directly or indirectly. Instead, I do believe I will be finding an alternative way to secure a copy of this game, and to support Falcom I will simply purchase another copy of a game of theirs that I already own, perhaps I will get a copy of Trails of Cold Steel 3 on the Switch, though I already own it on the PC.
My point is that we should be supporting companies that make the things we want, by giving them money equal to the value of the product that we receive from them.
