Okay, so kind of like the fan theory that James Bond is not his actual name, it's a code name. Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan were all different agents operating under the same code name. When a former Bond died or retired, a new Bond would take up the code name.
Granted, that theory does have a few plot holes, like how Ernst Blofeld (played by a different actor in each appearance) recognized different Bonds. Or why Roger Moore mourned the death of Tracy Bond when she was the wife of Lazenby Bond.
