It was the 60s though so it was more prevalent then. I do think that they placed the story in the 60s precisely so they can show and use these events to tell the woke story.
I could see riffing off Allison being black in the 60s, but making a big deal about it in every single episode is unnecessary. The homophobia bits were totally unnecessary and they went really far out of their way to showcase it.
