I could see riffing off Allison being black in the 60s, but making a big deal about it in every single episode is unnecessary. The homophobia bits were totally unnecessary and they went really far out of their way to showcase it.
True, the Vayna + Farmer's Wife story should have been more about protecting his family than the "she's gay" part.
As to the every episode has racism, we are also only seeing a part of their lives in the 60s - and only really a few days (10?) at most of the "present" timeline, and some flashbacks.
