Go to your city or county and look/ask about volunteering to seve on boards or commissions. These are unpaid positions, which you show up for maybe one night a week. The boards and commission are the feeders to the local city/county positions...then you can run for school boards, or even city council positions.

I served on a board for the city of long beach, CA, and when I escaped CA and moved to a small rural town in AZ, i volunteered and was appointed to 2 boards..and even in that small role, I was shocked to see how horrible the local government is.
I now live outside of any city limits in unincorporated area...so can't sit on any city boards...
But the local city/county boards, commissions, offices are where we need non marxist non authoriarians......government positions and offices have a way of attracting lazy, dumb, pushy, nanny shitbirds...and as awful an experience it is...we all need to do our part...because they ARE turning each little community blue....very very slowly.

I was told by an extended family member on vacation recently, "Hey! So when are YOU running for office? I'd vote for you!" She is part of a group that moved out here (fairly rural area) and some of these people don't even have kids in the district but are suing the school repeatedly because we implemented arming some of our teachers. I think this latest lawsuit is the fifth or sixth. Everytown is helping them. This year our school is paying an astronomical amount of money in insurance because of these lawsuits. They are taking money directly from these children they want to supposedly protect! Really pisses me off. You come in here, to this place I've lived since second grade, and start trying to fundamentally change us? Hell. No.
Long story short, I think I'm running for school board next year. I'll start the clean up there... :) Then maybe on to city council eventually! Wish me luck! LOL

I worked at a company who was integrating iso 9001 and it's ridiculous how much they needed it.
It mainly comes down to documenting processes and data storage. We had a ton of people get sick and the factory didn't miss a single day, I was able to read up on the necessary procedures and pick up where others left off.
My issue is with the lack of a USA based standard that is optimized for our unique freedom. We had to pay a guy to study ISO 9001 and weed out and/or translate the stuff we didn't need.
It's a world standard that corporations can voluntarily sign up for. These standards can effect everything from what measurement system to use, to how small groups should be organized, or what a company's supply chain should look like. It's all encompassing and in my experience, companies who decide to adopt the certification make a half hearted effort, claim they are certified and then promptly discard the aspects of the certification that are too hard to maintain.
The advantage of this certification is that many companies will prefer to do business with other companies that are certified. The disadvantage is that there's a tremendous amount of micro managing that is required to achieve and maintain the certification, inevitably creating a large bureaucracy within the company that is responsible for it. This, in turn, slows production and causes a burden on the company's pocketbook. This is why most companies cheat throughout the certification process and then fail to maintain the standards of the certification.
Like many things dreamed up by academics, it's mostly unworkable in the real world.
ISO standard tend to focus on quality control, consistency, and extreme vetting. (They call it due diligence when selecting things like vendors, software, purchases, etcc but its extreme vetting.)
ISO 9001 is an international standard that tells a company how to structure their quality system. It is used as a benchmark by governments/other organizations to tell us if a company has minimum organizational structure. Does it really apply to trades people or small mom and pop shops? No. But larger companies often need that structure to not be a mess to deal with (will explain below). Being certified to that or other relevant ISO standards is a key indicator in vendor selection for many organizations.
So, what does it encompass?
It places importance on things like management responsibility (is management looking at the health of their company and responding to indicators and trends of bad quality, customer/employee problems, resourcing problems, etc), purchasing controls (are they managing their supplier to ensure good product comes in the door or buying black box slave labor shit from Libya), various aspects of quality control (investigating problems broadly - these could be customer deaths related to your product, or breaks in your system that result in bad product going out the door, employee injury, etc), and product design/validation/testing to ensure ongoing compliance.
Is it hard to comply to? No, not unless your management sucks or people refuse to adopt a quality mindset. I’ve worked in manufacturing for over 10 years, auditing suppliers and other partner companies as well as ourselves and the only companies that can’t figure it out are the ones I’d genuinely rather avoid.
A lot of Chinese companies do little red envelope certification, that is they bribe their certifying bodies and have a fake quality system which is why their products, on the whole, suck and they have such a hard time fixing a problem when it comes up.

Ya. ISO is hung up on European Statism. Like defining a character encoding that is truly universal. They failed so hard at it, a small consortium of U.S. companies created a non-profit that completely stole a march on them. And it was implemented by two U.S. hackers in one night.

This is why we need US-based standards, ISO is primarily useful for global buyouts and takeovers.

What is ISO 9001
It's a world standard that corporations can voluntarily sign up for. These standards can effect everything from what measurement system to use, to how small groups should be organized, or what a company's supply chain should look like. It's all encompassing and in my experience, companies who decide to adopt the certification make a half hearted effort, claim they are certified and then promptly discard the aspects of the certification that are too hard to maintain.
The advantage of this certification is that many companies will prefer to do business with other companies that are certified. The disadvantage is that there's a tremendous amount of micro managing that is required to achieve and maintain the certification, inevitably creating a large bureaucracy within the company that is responsible for it. This, in turn, slows production and causes a burden on the company's pocketbook. This is why most companies cheat throughout the certification process and then fail to maintain the standards of the certification.
Like many things dreamed up by academics, it's mostly unworkable in the real world.
ISO standard tend to focus on quality control, consistency, and extreme vetting. (They call it due diligence when selecting things like vendors, software, purchases, etcc but its extreme vetting.)
ISO 9001 is an international standard that tells a company how to structure their quality system. It is used as a benchmark by governments/other organizations to tell us if a company has minimum organizational structure. Does it really apply to trades people or small mom and pop shops? No. But larger companies often need that structure to not be a mess to deal with (will explain below). Being certified to that or other relevant ISO standards is a key indicator in vendor selection for many organizations.
So, what does it encompass?
It places importance on things like management responsibility (is management looking at the health of their company and responding to indicators and trends of bad quality, customer/employee problems, resourcing problems, etc), purchasing controls (are they managing their supplier to ensure good product comes in the door or buying black box slave labor shit from Libya), various aspects of quality control (investigating problems broadly - these could be customer deaths related to your product, or breaks in your system that result in bad product going out the door, employee injury, etc), and product design/validation/testing to ensure ongoing compliance.
Is it hard to comply to? No, not unless your management sucks or people refuse to adopt a quality mindset. I’ve worked in manufacturing for over 10 years, auditing suppliers and other partner companies as well as ourselves and the only companies that can’t figure it out are the ones I’d genuinely rather avoid.
A lot of Chinese companies do little red envelope certification, that is they bribe their certifying bodies and have a fake quality system which is why their products, on the whole, suck and they have such a hard time fixing a problem when it comes up.
In short, it’s a boilerplate set of baseline principles to ensure good product goes out the door. It says ‘you, generally, need to have these rules...but how you write and apply them is up to you’
