I think that he underestimated his opponents and was too much of a fanatic. He thought of himself as a liberator of the occupied German lands, but the ends did not justify the means. He thought the war could end peacefully and quickly with the full restitution of enemy lands minus the Versailles territories and that was his fatal mistake. He did perform an economic miracle in Germany which is why he had such high support from the people. On the plus side he really fucking hated communists and had a sincere concern that communism would spread through Europe. Ironically he may have contributed to the spread of communism.

His views on Darwin's theory of natural selection were totally misguided to say the least.
