That is quite the conundrum. I'm pushed towards locke's theory of natural law where humans are inherently evil and would devolve into savagery without social contracts so I think it would possibly tantalize our darkest desires but it wouldn't be conducive towards maintaining a functional society, executions should be quick and painless with little fanfare.
I agree re executions and am constantly awed by the "stupidity" (?) involving them. All that's required is a lack of oxygen to quickly and humanely dispatch a human. To be generous, sneak 'em a sleeping pill on some random night and cancel them while they nap.
Little by little science is waking up to what I have known for years; that we're just slightly smarter than some animals, dumber than others, and the instincts we were born with have been all but lost to our belief that we are smart enough to manipulate and exist outside of the natural world.
realistically, one of the fastest ways is hanging, because if properly calculated, it crushes the spinal cord causing instantaneous loss of feeling to all of the lower body.
That's true, but hanging is basically a spectator sport and as with current techniques, unless the goal is further punishing the convicted, is unnecessary overkill.
