Don't know a timeline for the Byrd switch, but I know the Confederate flags (and most of the statues) were all passed back between 1920's ish to 1950's ish.
This whole thing is so strange to me. Why would you make peace terms that didn't include your conquered enemy not flying their battle flag in conquered territory, and not building monuments to their conquered military leaders? But if that flag and those monuments didn't even become a thing until 55 years later? Then it has nothing to do with slavery and just memorializes history.
I only thought the blm narrative was a lie before this; this greatly expands my realization of the depth of their confusion. The Charlottesville incident is still big to these people, and they've lost track of the fact it was a protest against removing monuments. They conflate that desire with "being a nazi." They claim everyone there was a nazi. I see no peaceful resolution to any of this ...
