It’s cause they realized that attaching their party to defunding the police was hurting them in the polls.
I'm 200% sure this is the case. Defunding/abolishing the police (as if they aren't meant to be the same thing) isn't actually a popular stance outside of woke Twitter and the BLM/Antifa activist circle, I saw a study showing that something like 80%+ of even black people want at least the same number of cops or even more in their neighborhood. Running on defunding the police is a non-starter, since the former are baked-in Biden voters anyway.
What nobody (quite rightfully) wants is more corrupt & tyrannical law enforcement: the sort that would suppress evidence, try to get people wrongfully locked up to pad their resume, and indulge in criminal activity themselves while going after anyone else who does the same. You know, people like Joe's running mate.
In other words, we should defund the FBI?
