Not sure if it'll change your mind, but I always saw it as a back door to make F/A weapons illegal across the board without running too flagrantly afoul of the Second Amendment.
The fact that you have to get a Tax Stamp to run a Vertical Fore Grip on an AR Pistol is fucking retarded and just shows why the ATF doesn't need to exist at all.
