I was going to get my son a Ruger 10/22 like I had as well, but I decided on the Henry youth rifle instead. It’s pretty great, tons of fun to shoot and real easy transition from daisy lever BB gun.
My mom almost bought a S&W shield in 9mm, don't remember exact model it was a while ago. although I wish my dad went shooting with me and when I have a kid I will definitely bring him out.
Yep, first gun I ever shot was indeed a 10/22. The first gun I ever bought, I bought with my own money at age 15; a used Ithaca Saddlegun lever action .22, which I still own. I installed fiberglass insulation in a house under construction in Las Vegas in the middle of summer to earn the money for that gun.
My first gun was a Sears branded Winchester 190 22lr. Nice little tube fed semiauto. It was left to my a few years ago by my grandfather who passed away.
I had been a liberal socialist for years in my youth, indoctrinated in college. After school I got married and had kids and wasn't very involved in politics - I just ate up whatever was put out in the mainstream media. My grandfather, a former green beret, passed away and my uncle gave to my mother that 22 rifle for me to keep. At first I was too scared... A gun? In my house? No way. I left it at my mother's for months. One day, I decided, not sure why, to learn a bit about the gun. Mainly to honor my grandfather who was a former green beret and an avid hunter. From there it snowballed.
I began to get really into firearms and began to expand my collection. I still btw did not support Trump at all. I didn't vote in 2016 and thought he was an idiot. But at this time I began to notice how ridiculous gun control pushes were. How insane the laws are. How the ones pushing gun laws are ignorant, lying, or both. When you start seeing a politician outright lie about something you're knowledgeable about, it brings red flags.
I began going onto reddit for r/gundeals. From there, still not sold on Trump, I decided to check out r/the_donald - honestly I think it was to laugh at all the "idiot" Trump supporters. What I saw was such a huge red pill. I was told it was racist. I was told it was violent. I was told that Trump supporters are evil trolls who hate everyone. I think you all can figure out the rest.
Long post lol. Sunday gunday always will remind me of my grandfather. He was such a great man. I wish I could let him know that, even after his death, he has made me such a better man and father and husband. Love you Grandpap.
Yeah mine does too. Runs really good for me. I should really buy a Marlin or something to shoot in it's stead though, it is sentimental and I don't want to wear it out. I hear the barrels can loosen up over time.
Dude that was my second Rifle! I got one used at a gunshop for $100 back when I lived in NH. I think the iron sights are a little fuckered but I can just put on an optic with the small rail.
Chances are that you have many other male predecessors who served in past wars. My grandfather fought in korea and Vietnam and got a Purple Heart. Most of my male relatives served in the military. Only by being raised by a communist single mother was I disconnected from the reality of my family history. Took me far too long to stumble my way back to the right side. For me I got sucked into politics on Sept 11, 2001, due to my distrust of bush jr. I noticed the most prepared he was for anything was when he gave that speech after 9/11 saying who the enemy was and launching the Middle East campaign. Trump is the first politician to win my trust since I voted for Al Gore back in the 2000 election, before my trust inThe Democrat party was severely broken. I didn’t vote for Obama, I figured out his smooth talking bullshit well before that election. But yeah, it was really 9/11 that destroyed my blind faith in the infallibility of the federal government. I could never believe that the best air force in the world would allow two attacks on nyc an hour apart, and an attack on the pentagon itself all in one day. To this day I don’t believe it. Since Trump started running, the Dems have increasingly revealed their true colors, and they’re communist through and through. It’sa sad state of affairs.
I still keep an eye out for a 1st gen Walther P99 for the same reason. A bit obscure at this point to be sure, but I absolutely want one because of the Bond connection.
I think the ppk design, although almost 100 years old, is still superior to the glock. It’s got major safety features built in. DA/SA is far safer than glock’s absurd trigger safety, and the external safety decocker is a second means of preventing accidental discharge. Best modern handgun IMO, the beretta 92x/m9a3, has both the same safety features. To S&W’s credit, they added external safeties to their striker pistols, unlike glock. 1911’s are awesome but 9 mm’s have been shown to be more accurate for the average shooter due to lower recoil. An enhanced 1911 in 9 mm would probably be just as good or better than the beretta. Heavier guns absorb recoil better, so a polymer gun has another strike against it, not to mention that polymer frames can melt or be chewed up by dogs, etc. there’s probably a niche right now for polymer frame DA/SA pistols with external safeties that look awesome like the ppk and m9 but manufacturers seem to have gone lock stock and barrel into strikers.
I used to work at an indoor pistol range and over 50% of the ND's that happened during my time there were glocks. The last one i recall went through the counter a bit down from the register, so we stuck a wooden dowel with a sign on it that said "Cops: 13 Civilians: 4".
Some of the more memorable cop ND's involved one having his sidearm go off when he adjusted his holster while sitting on the couch in the lobby watching TV. Round went through the couch, skipped off the floor, down the hall, and took out the vending machine. That one missed me by about 2 feet. Had another go off next to me where i ended up drawing on the cop and kicking him out.
Have you ever shot a PPK in 380?
Nasty little gun. Difficult to shoot fast and accurate.
Try it on the clock sometime at an IDPA practice.
I don’t like Glocks, but they like me. The clock doesn’t lie. I’m faster and more accurate and faster split times for follow up shots with my Glock 19 than anything else.
I have run many modern (and some vintage) autoloaders on the clock and it’s no contest.
CZ, S&W, 1911s, Ruger, Sigs, Walther... love ‘em all but the old tactical Tupperware is king for me.
At the competition level, sure, but when you’re talking concealed carry you want smaller stature, ruggedness, sights that won’t snag, robust safety features, and accuracy. Ppk checks the concealed carry boxes pretty well. Beretta 92 would be just as fast and accurate as a Glock but with better safety features, IMO. And yeah, I have shot a ppk/s, if that counts. Earlier today, in fact. Recoil isn’t bad but it can bite you if you hold it wrong.
Get a shot timer and draw from your concealed carry and put shots on target.
You gonna conceal carry a Beretta 92? Someone might but it is way big to appendix.
If you have never done real world dynamic training on the clock, (not an indoor range) I can’t stress enough how much that changes your perspective on what makes a good carry gun.
1.5 seconds draw from conceal to first shot clean A zone hit @ 7 yards is my benchmark.
I’ve carried concealed for nearly 15 years and with drawers full of every holster design you can think of I’ve pretty much tried it all.
Appendix carry a Glock 19 for the past 2 years and I’ve never been more confident.
Beretta 92 comes in three sizes: full, centurion and compact. It’s got DA/SA and an external safety decocker, making it among the safest of pistols. I’d trade a little more weight which just reduces perceived recoil to get those safety features and all metal construction. Capacity and accuracy are the same, I think. There are some top experts running the beretta, too. Supposedly it’s capable of three inch groups at 50 yards in capable hands. Glock certainly has the cool factor but so does beretta, I think. I looked closely at most of the options out there and I think beretta has most to offer and can serve you well from beginner to expert. Due to its firing mechanism and balance it also reduces limp wristing, which is nice for beginners.
I own a ruger LCP .380 and I've put 1000+ rounds through it. I can draw and put a torso hit at 7 yards in under 1.5 seconds. Whatever you decide to carry, you just have to practice with it.
My first gun was the .22LR bolt action rifle my father had as a kid, which he then passed down to me. I enjoyed target shooting with it on the weekends so much that I made the mistake of mentioning it and my range time to other kids at school.
Some Karen of a teacher must have heard something, because one night the cops showed up at our door, said they'd heard rumors I might be planning a school shooting...rumors that, I shouldn't even have to say, were COMPLETELY without foundation...and they would like my parents to voluntarily and temporarily turn over all guns in the house, just until things settle down a bit.
My father trusted the system and complied.
Somehow, the story of this happening got out, and high school rumor mill turned it into "the cops took his guns because he was planning to shoot up the school". My family's efforts to show good faith were treated as proof of my guilt. I became a social pariah. Shortly thereafter, I was suspended from school for the rest of the year because "other parents were saying they didn't feel their kids were safe with me there", and in place of classroom education, they sent a shitty tutor to my house who didn't know most of the subject matter. My performance dropped, I lost all of my honors classes, I was behind in math for the rest of my high school career. The school social worker visited us more than once, with both my parents and myself having the impression that she was looking for excuses to try and get me removed from my parents' custody. The school allowed me to return the next year, but required I be supervised by a minder like some of the retarded kids, just so everyone felt safe. This of course make me a friendless laughing stock.
My parents finally had enough, after the school kept the minder on me for longer and longer after repeatedly promising it was only temporary, they threatened to sue and got them to back down. They demanded the cops give us back our guns. Even though they'd been turned over voluntarily, the cops refused, said we had to jump through all kinds of permitting hoops to get back guns that were already grandfathered...literally, we'd owned them since they were passed down from my grandfather. After we jumped through those hoops, the cops moved the goalposts, now they were saying my parents couldn't have their property back until I was 21 and they could prove I was no longer a resident of their house.
My dad lawyered up and assraped them in court. We got our guns back, and I got my first right-wing belief, that gun control is a crock of shit and the government can never be trusted with it.
My Mosin is a '91 with the hex receiver. It is currently 99 years old; and let me tell ya, the old Russian bastard kicks like a mule and is still sub MOA.
Winchester single shot 20 gauge for Christmas when I was 5 (turned 6 in Feb). My dad sawed the stock off to fit me and I shot a whole box of birdshot that day. That thing beat me black and blue.
I’ve got several guns in my safe that came to me on Christmas mornings. My dad was the BEST.
It's funny... I've amassed what some would consider an arsenal... all gifted or bartered. I've never bought myself a gun in my life and I'm an old guy.
Me too! I bought my 1946 M44 at a pawn shop in 1998, for about $80. I still have it, and it it still shoots. The stock has the Cyrillic initials scratched into it, of the Soviet soldier who previously carried it.
Besides the massive fireball, the best part is if you run out of ammo, the bayonet still makes it an effective zombie killing machine.
That's a solid choice, tbh I wouldn't recommend going down the surplus route unless its a modern pistol. I almost got a cz82 but wanted a "normal" caliper that's easy to get.
The .380EZ is a good gun. We've been seeing them a lot in classes the last year or so. Very popular for people with grip strength issues. Be advised, though - the first production run of the .380EZ was recalled for issues with the safety (it tended to turn itself on while you were firing). I guess they are coming out with a 9mmEZ as well. My only gripe is that grip safety, but most people don't find it a hassle. I just don't like grip safeties.
For your first I’d recommend the beretta 92x. Ultra reliable, less recoil than polymer frames, less expensive compared to 1911s and about on par with the most popular polymer framed guns, stupidly accurate, a favorite of expert shooters but also beginner friendly, with superior safety features compared to striker pistols. Then maybe get a smaller pistol for concealed carry when you do more research. Just my $.02.
My Dad bought my brother and I each Marlin Model 60 rifles, I was 10 years old. I shot the hell out of that rifle.I also had a Daisy 880 air rifle that I bought with my allowance. Carried that Daisy with me everywhere. Dad only let us take out the Marlins when he was around to shoot with us. Some of my best childhood memories.
A piece of shit RG .38 special that I got when my father died. It didn’t have grips and the barrel was loose. I took it to a gun smith in central TX and he told me, quote,”Get that the fuck out of my store.” A real nice gun smith in CO found original grips, fixed the barrel. I only take it out shooting once a year and I never shoot +p ammo, but it goes boom when you pull the trigger. It’s on my nightstand.
First gun I owned was a stock Sig Sauer 226…it wasn’t the last, but it has the distinction of being the closest gun I could put my hands on when a lowlife meth addict decided he was going to try to burglarize my home. I stopped him. He’s lucky to be still alive and has about 6 years left at the State Prison.
Not sure if it was the right decision, since when he was robbing me he supposedly had 3 years left until his minimum release date, and when I look him up he’s been released and reoffended several more times.

Mossberg 183D-C in .410, it was Dad's gun that gradually became mine in the late 60's. It was a working gun (like a working dog) on a small poultry farm next to a swamp. I first learned to shoot it when I was about eight, it has dispatched countless coons, possums, snakes, squirrels, rats, nuisance birds, etc. throughout the years and still working. Nothing on it has ever broken, and I still have both choke tubes. It has prowled many, many miles through the woods and swamps of my childhood, and is with me to this day. You can't beat it as a snake charmer.
Besides my first inherited 22 rifle, my first purchase was a Taurus TCP 738. It ran for one mag then jammed ever round after. Magazine issue turns out. I sold it right away and bought a S&W sd9ve after that
Glock 19, it should be everybody's every American's first gun (unless you get a .45), be warned, they don't float, lost mine in an ice fishing incident.
Talked Mom and Dad into an H&R rifle/shotgun combo for my 13th birthday, in 1967. Break action single shot with interchangeable barrels fitting the one receiver and stock, a 24 inch 20 gauge and 18 inch .3030 barrels.
Like this one except mine isn't for sale, that is, lost in the Great Boat Wreck, take 4...
The pistola was around $375ish. I bought a locking case and they sold me some 9mm hollow points - it was all they had. All together it came out to around $550 something. The place I went to had so little in stock. They had NO 9mm ammo except for that box of HPs
Hey, a Star PD, the Spanish version of a super compact lightweight commander. Great, light compact 1911ish single action pistol and if I recall correctly, quite accurate and reliable. Back in the eighties gun for me. Saved me from a mugging or worse, but that's another story.
I bought one used and shot it it to pieces. I was a kid with a job at a firearms dealer, and the price was right. I started reloading, had access to lots of cheap ammo, and put a ridiculous amount of rounds through it. It was fun to shoot and quite accurate. It was not designed for such heavy use and even though I replaced the buffer every thousand rounds, the frame cracked. It was a slick carry gun back in the pre polymer era, and if I ran into one for sale today I'd be inclined to own one again if the price was right, even though parts might be a PITA.
Jeff Cooper called it a "carry a lot, shoot a little" gun, and he was smarter than I was.
The first firearm i bought on my own once i turned 18 was a Springfield XD-9mm with the 4" barrel. Added a tungsten guide rod, new springs, and some True-Glo TFO sights and its now both very accurate and great for concealed carry. Unfortunately I live in the People's Republic of Kalifornia where thats not allowed, and before i was able to sell it, it was lost in a boating accident off Newport Beach.
Prior to that, i did have a few firearms that were gifts from my father. Usually guns he got from friends collections or that were passed down. Some really old stuff too.
Model 1890 Winchester .22 cal pump rifle. (made in 1909)
Model 1892 Winchester 38-40 Lever action (first year, 4 digit serial)
1913 A.H. Fox 16ga double gun. (my most prized firearm)
What pistol is that? First gun I ever shot was probably a Zastava M88A which looks kind of similar. I didn't learn anything about guns or shooting until I owned an SD9VE.
My first gun (not counting BB guns) was a Marlin Model 780 bolt action .22, it was a birthday gift from my parents in 1979. Came with a little Weaver 4x scope. I still have the rifle and the scope, and it still shoots well. I'll never part with it.
SD9, but I accidentally dropped it in the lake.
i hate it when that happens.
Are you Canadian. Since most of us canoe to work, this, sadly, happens quite a lot up here.
I hear you guys had a lot of rifles fall in the lake this year.. Thats super unfortunate!
Yeah, massive uptick in canoe trips on May 1st, 2020. I'm told it was a really windy day.
Mine was a Springfield Armory XD Mod 2. I never should have gone boating this summer... So sad. :(
Condolences.
My condolences.
That's a nice pistol, damn.
first gun i shot, like many here im sure, was a ruger 10/22
my dad bought me a Remington 1100 when i was 18 or 19. first gun i bought was a S&W shield.
I fucking love this place

M1 Garand

Glock 23. Bought it in 06 still have it at arms length all the time.
A p.o.s. High Point. I've since upgraded....a lot.
https://thedonald.win/p/GvFlbJBQ/
ngl I was tempted by the hipoint as a first pistol but found that there are surplus pistols for only a little more but much higher quality.
The Hi-Point carbines are super reliable, I've had the 995TS for 10 years and never had a malfunction. I do the bare minimum maintenance
My first gun was the .22LR bolt action rifle my father had as a kid, which he then passed down to me. I enjoyed target shooting with it on the weekends so much that I made the mistake of mentioning it and my range time to other kids at school.

You'll get 20 years in England for that.
My first gun was actually a 91/30 1927 production Mosin. However the Star Model BM was my first pistol.
91/30 gang, checking in. This was long enough ago that a 1943 Tula only cost me sixty bucks.
fun fact mine was a Star BKM

P320 in .40. I wasn’t the biggest fan but i might have had one of the first few built. It had some issues.
Very wise if you. Right now .40 is the only handgun caliber I regularly see in stores.
Single shot 20's kick like a mule.
It's funny... I've amassed what some would consider an arsenal... all gifted or bartered. I've never bought myself a gun in my life and I'm an old guy.
Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm
Can also endorse.
This should be one of those password reminder questions.
A Gamo break action air rifle when i was 7.
I now have over 20 rifles.
I've still got my Benjamin Sheridan pump air rifle in .20cal from when i was a kid.
A Marlin bolt action .22 with a tube magazine in the Boy Scouts.
A mosin nagant m44 back when they were 50 bucks.
That also was the first gun I ever fired.
I have a couple of M44s. I bought them around the same time, they were $49.99 each or 3 for $125. Great little rifle.
That 7.62R makes a nice fireball
indeed.
Ithaca 20 gauge single shot. Given to me by my grandfather on my 11th birthday.
Marlin 22. Not counting my Daisy bb gun at 5 y.o.
If we're counting non-firearms. my first was a crossman airsoft pistol
Still shopping for my first gun. Thinking of a Shield EZ.
380EZ is best wife gun. Mine loves hers.
My wife is one of those, and she likes her EZ very much.
I've seen advertisements for them.
Nor do I. But my wife seems to have no problem with it.
It’s already out
For your first I’d recommend the beretta 92x.
Sig (sigpro) 2022 9mm
1907 Stevens Little Scout .22 (1976).
Similar, only mine was made circa 1910 and chambered in .22 Long.
S&W .38 Stub Nose
A piece of shit RG .38 special that I got when my father died. It didn’t have grips and the barrel was loose. I took it to a gun smith in central TX and he told me, quote,”Get that the fuck out of my store.” A real nice gun smith in CO found original grips, fixed the barrel. I only take it out shooting once a year and I never shoot +p ammo, but it goes boom when you pull the trigger. It’s on my nightstand.
Remington Nylon 66.
My fist gun is whatever gun I have in my fist.
"Still got the shovel." https://imgur.com/FkYsaWl Mossberg 183D-C in .410, it was Dad's gun that gradually became mine in the late 60's. You can't beat it as a snake charmer.
keltec sub 2000
Gen 2. Been looking at their trigger kit and iron sights but cant justify the purchase yet. Not a fan of the sights but i still love it!
Besides my first inherited 22 rifle, my first purchase was a Taurus TCP 738. It ran for one mag then jammed ever round after. Magazine issue turns out. I sold it right away and bought a S&W sd9ve after that
Glock 19, it should be
everybody'severy American's first gun (unless you get a .45), be warned, they don't float, lost mine in an ice fishing incident.Glock 19 is almost perfect. if it had better safety features I might have bought one myself.
It has 3-4 safeties, but I think I know what you mean, I usually it carry chamber empty.
When I was in first grade, my dad gave me a .22. Can you fucking imagine?
Talked Mom and Dad into an H&R rifle/shotgun combo for my 13th birthday, in 1967. Break action single shot with interchangeable barrels fitting the one receiver and stock, a 24 inch 20 gauge and 18 inch .3030 barrels.
Like this one except mine isn't for sale, that is, lost in the Great Boat Wreck, take 4...

Remington R1 1911
I bought my first gun yesterday. I pick it up Tuesday. I got a SAR USA model 2000 9mm. I'll show a picture next Sunday.
Congrats! How was the price with the current surge in demand?
The pistola was around $375ish. I bought a locking case and they sold me some 9mm hollow points - it was all they had. All together it came out to around $550 something. The place I went to had so little in stock. They had NO 9mm ammo except for that box of HPs
Ammo availability has sucked. I bought 2 cases of target 9mm a few months ago, but if I want hollow points, I gotta pay up the ass for them.
Congrats on having such a nice example.
Some really old stuff too.
first gun fired? JC Higgins .22LR rifle of some sort. Stolen from my dad by a crackhead.
first gun owned? Some sort of single shot bolt action Marlin rifle in .22LR. Also stolen by the same crackhead.
If true that's pretty funny although sorry for the losses.
It's true. The crackhead was my brother.
damn, my uncle was not into crack but the same kind of dickhead that stole from my grandmother.
👉 fist gun
Yeah I noticed I did a fucky wucky on the spelling and face palmed when I realized it.
We still love you ❤️
Daisy BB gun. 6 years old. Back in the day when 6 year old boys got BB guns instead of being conditioned to transition.
What pistol is that? First gun I ever shot was probably a Zastava M88A which looks kind of similar. I didn't learn anything about guns or shooting until I owned an SD9VE.
i was wondering if it was an 80% build or something? Its very interesting either way.
My first gun (not counting BB guns) was a Marlin Model 780 bolt action .22, it was a birthday gift from my parents in 1979. Came with a little Weaver 4x scope. I still have the rifle and the scope, and it still shoots well. I'll never part with it.
