I've seen a few Russkie rifles up here recently, thought I'd contribute with a few of my own.

EpicPede 3 points ago +4 / -1

They look real nice pede.

2
GopnikGod 2 points ago +2 / -0

Hell yeah! My first gun was a mosin. Nasty, big cartridge. I just wish I had an obrez for home defense.

3
BasedCentipede9000 [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

If the laws change, I'll make an Obrez for fun and games.

mosin-nagant with a pistol grip in Commiefornia... your flirting with danger (jk)

The mosins have a super crappy coating of shellac that scratches easily and looks poopy. they dipped them in the shellac prior to boxing them up for storage. Get some #0 steel wool and scrub it down. Wipe it with minwax antique oil finish (boiled linseed oil) then wipe it off, repeat 3 times.

cherboltz 2 points ago +2 / -0

Oh man I thought it was a Kar-98k

2
RegularAmerican 2 points ago +2 / -0

Pistol grips are fine on pump/bolt actions.

Jealous of the SKS. They are hard to find now

11
AtomicShnoz 11 points ago +11 / -0

They aren't that hard to find, they are hard to find under $500. Local DBag gun store owner has one on the wall wants $900 for it. It isn't anything special like a tanker version. I asked him if that was Stalin's personal sidearm.

BasedCPA 5 points ago +5 / -0

SKS is a mass produced gun. Somewhat comparable to Mosin/Nagant.

As other noted, it is not difficult to find (there is plenty of them), but the price has increased.

Price increased due to the inflation and overall demand in guns.

SKS, by the way, is a simple universal and reliable gun.

What's with the backslash yo!?

The 3-line rifle M1891 (Russian: трёхлинейная винтовка образца 1891 года, tryokhlineynaya vintovka obraztsa 1891 goda), colloquially known in the West as Mosin-Nagant and in Russia as Mosin's rifle (Russian: винтовка Мосина, ISO 9: vintovka Mosina)

Other than slams fires. But built like a tank.

I haz strange question: Society goes on mostly normal until 2153, nasty war, Earth's humanity destroyed in 2156. Little town of ashfeathers and Martians wall themselves up in Siberia. One of them goes outside and finds an old Russian stockpile in 3420 - gets a Mosin-Nagant working without too much fuss. Think that might be realistic?

2
BasedCPA 2 points ago +2 / -0

There is an aura of mystery over Mosin-Nagant.

There is nothing special or extraordinary about it. It is a mass-produced tool, with the number of them exceeding 40 million. It is not much different from Mausers.

Yes, probable and realistic.

1
lanre 1 point ago +1 / -0

I don't own a mosin, but I love mausers, so I might be a bit biased. To me, a mosin does 90% of the mauser's job and was probably easier to manufacture, but I'd never chose a mosin over a mauser. That being said, it's not nearly the difference imo that you'd see going from a mauser to a garand if you had to use one in combat.

Some comparisons that match up with what I've seen people report https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzNlGlRHpMo

featherwinglove 1 point ago +1 / -0

There certainly is an aura of mystery around this particular one, lol! I'm glad I picked a good one. It just happened to be the only bolt-action rifle I could think of that would likely be found within a week's walk of Glie where I happened to decide it was.

Erebus sits on the ground overlooking the Great Gate. His "new" Maksutov telescope is isn't going to meet the same fate as his binoculars. The woman he's observing seemed to bear what must be the "Saviour's Light of Marksmanship." Whatever she aimed at, no matter how badly, was hit by the bullet she fired. Then she would struggle like a kid, first day at boot camp to get the bolt open. The accursed Devon Campbell could replace the plasma inducer, targeting software module, and projectile chip magazine of a BFG and have it back together faster than this phelp could reload this nineteenth century relic. <A nineteenth century relic that has claimed almost two hundred of my troops!> he fumes. It's not the numbers, since he's losing thousands each day from starvation and disease, but the insult that the Saviour would chose such a device, and such a soldier to break the latest siege of Glie.

She points the primitive device towards him and fires. She is seven kilometres away, and Erebus can't think of anything in between the featherwing and himself that she could be aiming at. The weapon doesn't have the ability to send a projectile anywhere near this far. As he's just starting to think that she finally once fired at nothing in particular, the objective lens of the only Maksutov telescope known to exist explodes.

Erebus rolls away from his position, over the ridge and behind cover. "Aarrrgghh!!"

As I go over it, I realize that I took some liberties with the miraculous in picking a rifle that should be able to load and fire :)

the SKS is the first rifle I ever bought back in the early 90's. Cost around $100 back then. Picked one off a rack of about 50.

Love it! Guns and Russia--reeee!

8
AtomicShnoz 8 points ago +8 / -0

The mosin nagants came with a double sided oil bottle. The one side was for vodka, and the other side was for vodka.

3
HighEmergy 3 points ago +3 / -0

Folding bayonet, very cool!

2
4ChanLiason 2 points ago +2 / -0

I want an M44 but they're so expensive now. Back in they day Mosin-Nagants were so cheap that I literally gave some away as gifts.

2
Homopratensis2 2 points ago +2 / -0

You do the bolt bending?

1
BasedCentipede9000 [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

It was bent when i bought it. All matching serial numbers. 1939 Mosin Sniper.

2
Homopratensis2 2 points ago +2 / -0

I had a brace of Finn Mosins. Got it down to just one pristine m39 now. Nice rifle.

Local store has 3 mosins for $300-$400 each. Tempting

4
DrGEOTUS 4 points ago +4 / -0

Old enough to remember when that was the price for a crate of 10. Guys used to buy Mosins like sliders at White Castle.

3
Doth 3 points ago +3 / -0

In some areas you can still find clean ones for $200!

2
lanre 2 points ago +2 / -0

Really? I thought they were all selling for like $400-500 now. At around $200 I think they're definitely worth considering.

2
Doth 2 points ago +2 / -0

I got mine for under $200 last year! The shop where I bought it, admittedly, has WAY too much inventory sitting around.

2
lanre 2 points ago +2 / -0

Oh nice. Yeah, I think they have a place with prices like that. I can't imagine spending $500 on one though.

2
TheWiseBuffalo 2 points ago +2 / -0

Ya these looked like they had some minor rusting on the bolt. Wondering if I should have just bought one for shits and giggles

1
lanre 1 point ago +1 / -0

For that much, I'd look into other rifles, like a k31, mauser variants, an arisaka (if you like reloading), etc. Imo the only reason to get a mosin is for collector purposes or cost. If you can't get a good price on them, there's plenty of other great milsurp rifles out there.

1
BasedCentipede9000 [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Are they Tula or Izhevsk?

1
TheWiseBuffalo 1 point ago +1 / -0

Not sure how to tell the difference other than the bolt handle was straight rather than 90 degrees like in the image.

1
BasedCentipede9000 [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Tula SKS rifles have a star with an arrow in it stamped on the receiver. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/jxzrcNpq-_EdaIrS8jykWwW2xB_8Hxsdyi8qqqN4Ghe71waUlc1-2oSMTWlh0P_1DM5Wt62rwzFIYuxC

Izhevsk rifles have a triangle with an arrow in it on the receiver. https://www.geocities.ws/Pentagon/Bunker/4064/PersCollection/M1895Survey/Post28Izhevsk.jpg

Very nice I've got a M91/30, yugo SKS, and bulgarian mak myself.

And a scoped K31.

Is that a Bushnell elite 10x scope?

Whats the cheek riser?

2
BasedCentipede9000 [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yes, it is a Bushnell Elite 10x. Good eye. The cheek riser is a Blackhawk: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CNUNII/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Love the sks!!

Ever consider putting it in a tapco stock?

6
BasedCentipede9000 [S] 6 points ago +6 / -0

Unfortunately I live in the People's Republic of California. Any changes at all to an SKS is a big no-no. I like the original look too.

3
Modus_Pwninz 3 points ago +3 / -0

Cali is such balls.

On the bright side, you can buy 30 round mags now for your...rifle that is probably banned anyway...

But yeah!

3
BasedCentipede9000 [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

I got a huge grip of mags during Freedom Week a few years ago. Now I'm just waiting for the stay to be lifted so I can click "buy" on all the goodies I have in my internet carts!
