When I was in High School, a teacher had us read "A Modest Proposal". It suggested the Irish people sell their children to the rich for food. It still remains one of the most powerful uses of political satire.
Back when I was in high school in about 1980 I just could not get a good grade on my essays, so I decided I would experiment with a gay themed essay because I believed my views were getting my downgraded. I wrote an essay about Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire being a lesbian. For evidence I had her sleeping with men to deny her true self, etc.... Not only did I get my A, the teacher told me my work was cutting edge in universities. I never took the class seriously again, it was parody. This post should be read by the people who think the woke world is something new.
I had a similar experience in the late 70's when I wrote a short research paper titled - "Eyebrows - The Unsung Heroes of the Forehead". I forget the grade I got, but it was solidly researched, I got a passing grad, and the teacher never questioned the sincerity of my efforts.
Other kids in the HS library didn't know why I was laughing when I found the difference between forehead sweat and the salinity of eyeballs. The biggest laughs of all came from my mom as she typed it for me. Good times.
Wish my mom had typed for me, I still am not a great typist. I still can't believe she thought the paper was deep and insightful. Since when is sleeping with men an indication of being a lesbian? Seriously?
