I don't understand pistol caliber ARs. If the projectile velocity is under 2200 FPS it just doesn't stop a threat like a rifle does.

In my state they are considered "pistols" and can be carried in a vehicle loaded where a rifle can't. Less recoil. Super compact, can fit in a backpack with folded stock. Can be set up to take standard Glock mags. Cheaper ammo. Great for hunting 2-legged vermin in a bad situation, like say being caught in the middle of a riot.

Even in rifle calibers such as 5.56 or .308 most states consider this configuration a "pistol".
