She could be campaigning outside of DC once she leaves the white house. She hasn't said what her next project will be. She might start working with congressional candidates too, which is equally important to the presidential election.

If you read her statement it says it is due to family issues, and if you have been paying attention to the recent happenings with her daughter, she is very obviously in the middle of a family crisis. Her daughter made headlines and was trending on twitter because she said she was going to try to get herself “emancipated” Aka legally removed from her own family.
Honestly, if Trump saw that, I can totally see him saying to her that she needs to go and be with her family right now.
