I really think George had some "mental health issues" to begin with. He's always been "of counsel" at top-notch law firm Wachtel Lipton, never a partner (or even an Associate as far as I can tell), even though he's not affiliated with any other firm. That's extremely unusual, and I suspect it's because he was just too mentally "off" to be accepted as a partner. Partners are in a position to expose a firm to serious risk, so mentally unstable attorneys are too dangerous to admit to the partnership, even if they do senior level work and/or rainmaking.
