Long story short, he said 10% of the straight population would get AIDS and everyone freaked out. He never apologized as far as I know for keeping the fact that the most vulnerable to it were gay men, drug users and blood transfusion recipients a secret. The reason AIDS is so known for the gay community is because people like Fauci was pushing that straight people would be the most victims of it.

In the early 1980s Fauci and every media outlet was screaming that we were going to have this worldwide heterosexual AIDS epidemic that would kill hundreds of millions of straight people, while all the data showed that only gays and IV drug users were at risk. I remember, in 1986, finding a stack of papers on the ground outside some county office. I picked them up to throw in the trash. The top paper was a summary of AIDS cases in the county. 2000 cases. 2 straight people - and I bet they were lying.
