When he started to lose a debate he would throw out some liberal slogan or buzzword and his audience would hoot and holler and shut down the debate. He was so use to that crutch that when he was debating Dan Crenshaw without an audience and was starting to look dumb, he through out a liberal slogan and paused waiting for an audience to cheer to save him. The look on his face when he realized that he was on his own was priceless.
You can see that without his audience to run interference and clap like trained seals he has this lost look on his face when Crenshaw refutes with FACTS. Everytime Crenshaw responded, you could see Mahers eyes divert away from the camera to whomever was watching off cam as if to say "Help!"

On a more serious note, the subject of john oliver came up when a colleague (fellow psychologist) and I were discussing politics a few months ago. Although we were both in agreement regarding the general shitlib inanity of the HBO show, my friend was surprised when I explained that the real insidiousness of it is its unmistakably hypnotic structure and pacing.
I ended up pulling up an episode or two off of youtube to show her what I meant. All of the segments I've ever seen from this show follow the same repetitive format: present some "argumentation" and "facts" for about 10 seconds, then quickly follow these up with a snarky quip (which themselves overwhelmingly take the form of complete non-sequitur or otherwise absurd metaphor) before any rational processing of the preceding argument can take place in the mind of the viewer. Further telling is that the only 'beats' or mental pauses in the show's pacing exist solely to highlight the approving laughter or applause of the studio audience. Repeat this basic formula without variation 20-40 times in a row and you have one of the 12-20 minute 'segments' that form the backbone of the show.
The end effect is (obviously) not to deliver information, but rather to literally teach the viewers -- on a subconscious level -- to mentally associate derisive laughter with any person or opinion that is at odds with the narrative's take on the chosen issue. And it accomplishes this by maintaining a strict adherence to a roughly 20-second cycle in which a stimulus is presented, and a response is cued. This is the sense in which the show is fundamentally hypnotic in effect -- even moreso than its precursors in the genre (Daily Show, Colbert, etc).
To my mind, oliver's show is representative of the media's increasing mastery of the methodologies of mass conditioning; in fact it is almost such a perfect technical accomplishment that I would almost have to admire it on technical grounds, if only it weren't so troubling a development, which moreover is in the hands of the entirely wrong people.

Very true. A lot of comedy is rooted in an anti culture sentiment (taboo). When you are on the side of culture, it's much more difficult to be funny. This is largely why the left can't meme, and why late night comedians aren't funny.
Because it is light hearted and fun. Telling someone they are full of crap in such a way is just good old family fun. Oliver's jokes suck and he just yells the F word a million times like he just learned it. Then his brain dead seal audience just yucks it up and claps. Yelling fuck isn't funny anymore. He went to uni and collaborated, and palled around with, the likes of Richard Ayoade (best known for the IT Crowd) David Mitchell & Robert Webb (best known in the UK for Peep Show, best known in the meme world for the "Are we the baddies?" sketch,) who are comedic geniuses, both in scripted comedy acting and in more improvised panel shows focused on witty banter. Mitchell and Ayoade are the bright spots of every panel show they're on.
I swear there's a PR company that specializes in shipping woke British comedy dross over here to do talk shows, and if I could hunt that person down, I'd be happy to challenge them to a duel to the death. On a more serious note, the subject of john oliver came up when a colleague (fellow psychologist) and I were discussing politics a few months ago. Although we were both in agreement regarding the general shitlib inanity of the HBO show, my friend was surprised when I explained that the real insidiousness of it is its unmistakably hypnotic structure and pacing.
I ended up pulling up an episode or two off of youtube to show her what I meant. All of the segments I've ever seen from this show follow the same repetitive format: present some "argumentation" and "facts" for about 10 seconds, then quickly follow these up with a snarky quip (which themselves overwhelmingly take the form of complete non-sequitur or otherwise absurd metaphor) before any rational processing of the preceding argument can take place in the mind of the viewer. Further telling is that the only 'beats' or mental pauses in the show's pacing exist solely to highlight the approving laughter or applause of the studio audience. Repeat this basic formula without variation 20-40 times in a row and you have one of the 12-20 minute 'segments' that form the backbone of the show.
The end effect is (obviously) not to deliver information, but rather to literally teach the viewers -- on a subconscious level -- to mentally associate derisive laughter with any person or opinion that is at odds with the narrative's take on the chosen issue. And it accomplishes this by maintaining a strict adherence to a roughly 20-second cycle in which a stimulus is presented, and a response is cued. This is the sense in which the show is fundamentally hypnotic in effect -- even moreso than its precursors in the genre (Daily Show, Colbert, etc).
To my mind, oliver's show is representative of the media's increasing mastery of the methodologies of mass conditioning; in fact it is almost such a perfect technical accomplishment that I would almost have to admire it on technical grounds, if only it weren't so troubling a development, which moreover is in the hands of the entirely wrong people.
