I agree with several other posters, and want to add to it:
Even if your State doesn't have "booby trap laws", there is plenty of case law that will be used against you.
You can set the mouse traps at the base (I know it won't be as effective), but then you'd have to make sure your State, City, or neighborhood doesn't have a "trapping law", or once again, you're liable for damages.
If your State doesn't have trapping laws, be sure to put a sign that is clearly visible and bright about mouse traps, and then you can probably just riddle your damn yard with as many industrial grade mouse traps as your big kind heart desires (but I'd check with a lawyer first anyway, to check where the "plausible deniability" line is drawn, and to check far away from public property [side walk] you should begin putting the traps).
