Here's what happened:

  1. At 17 seconds someone says "Sleepy Joe" (you can hear it if you raise the volume).

  2. Then at 19 seconds Trump says "Uh, lets be niceee, Biden".

The President corrected him from "Sleepy Joe" to "Biden". He was never referring to the guy that said "spygate". If you slow the video down (or find the slow version on Twitter), you'll hear it clearly as "spygate".

"...and that included President Obama, that included (GUY YELLS SOMETHING) that included.. " Long pause

Stops and points at person

"let's be nice"

"Biden" (finishing his sentence of who the plot included)

laughs.. "Shesh" points again to the person.

"this can only happen in NC"

the full statement he was making was:

"and it included Obama, that included Biden"

Why would Trump think "Sleepy Joe" is an insult he needed to correct?

Why would Trump think "Spygate" is an insult he needed to correct?

Here's it slowed down, go to 17 seconds. It's clear that the syllables are not "mon" and key", but "spy" and "gate":

Why would Trump think "Spygate" is an insult he needed to correct?

He wasn't correcting "Spygate", so there's no reason to speculate

Why would Trump think "Sleepy Joe" is an insult he needed to correct?

Trying to be funny? Maybe his PR team told him to lay off monikers and insults during the convention? Maybe he just wanted to interact with his public and saw an opportunity? Can't tell without asking him.

I feel like the microphones picking up the audience in the front row is set up to create shit storms. If I were Trump campaign, i would have them shut it off.

I know what it means, clearly can hear "Key" as the last syllable, I am predisposed to hear spygate because I Support Trump.

but we are left with the huge problem Trump told him to "be nice" and laughed that it "could only happen in NC"

He told the guy who said “sleepy joe” let’s be nice and corrected that it to Biden. He did not correct the guy saying spygate.

Biden was not a correction it was the last word in his sentence. Why correct Sleepy Joe when he says it all the time? Why correct Spygate when he is talking bout the plot?

Why was trump mad at the guy and point him out?

Why correct "sleepy joe" is obvious, maybe in that context when he's talking about a conspiracy that reached the absolute top of the government, he isn't interested in allowing Biden to be portrayed as just some lovable moron who was along for the ride. It's pretty obvious that he was correcting the sleepy joe thing when the guy yells sleepy joe, he says let's be nice and calls him Biden. Obviously he has no problem calling him sleepy joe when it suits him, so it's probably to convey a more serious tone.
