Guys and Gals, I'm looking to purchase my first long rifle for home defense, protectinga family of six. I own a crappy 9mm hangun that I bought at a pawn shot eons ago. Can anyone recommend an online site that is reasonably priced and reputable? Also, recommendations on manufacturer, caliber, capacity and dependability will be greatly appreciated.

If you are not familiar with the AR platform I would not recommend it for home defense. The best home defense is a 12ga shotgun with buck shot. You can pick up a Remington 870 which has been used for ever and is probably one of the easiest to use and keep clean.
Shotgun for home defense.
Just sayin’.
Get an AR-15 in 5.56. Get a 16” barrel with a 1-7 Twist.
If you can legally own 30 round magazines get a few of them.
AR-15 parts are standardized to a military specification so most ARs are pretty reliable as long as the manufacturer follows the milspec standard.
If you are handy look into building your own as you will get a better gun for the money and it’s not really that difficult to put one together.
Get about 200 rounds to practice with before you do anything else with it.
Get a good sling, and probably a light if you want it for home defense.
I wouldn’t recommend getting an AR if you aren’t familiar with weapons. However if you choose to get one get one chambered in 5.56. It is a bale to fire both 5.56 and 223 rounds which allows for a little more ease of finding ammo.
Get what the swat team guys use. (Short barrel) Then... get trained how to use it and practice at the range.
Don’t get a short barrel without a permit or you will have a hard time with the ATF.
I own 3 Ar15 pistols I have never had a problem with the ATF
I own 3 ar15 pistols, and 4 rifles. (My main hobby is gun collecting) I am just going to throw out there my dream ar15 in case you ever become incredibly wealthy. “Nemo Omen .300 Win. Mag”
The AR-15 is a battle rifle. It’s bad as heck, but not really ideal for home defense. A shotgun would do the trick much more effectively, or a pistol caliber carbine if you prefer.
