One of my summer camp counselors was an old woman who LITERALLY escaped the East German Stasi as a 9 year old girl. She was shot at by border guards so she could flee to the US controlled side of Berlin. She loved this country, she taught me German, and she warned me to never let the freedom of America die.

The other counselors asked why she would tell children these things. She responded, "Because they need to know it can happen anywhere, even here!"
