I think it's pretty clear - he knew he was going down for rape, and he was gonna shoot his way out, or try to flee. He had an arrest-on-contact warrant. The cops were called for this incident because of yet another domestic violence call - he was probably confronting the mother of the victim in the warrant, or the actual victim.
This dude is a complete piece of shit. But, of course, the press is doing the usual 'He din do nuffin, he wuz turning his life around!" talking to people who know him in high school, who probably haven't seen him since then, or know about his criminal history.
