It is a nightmare. Most people I see identify as liberal and I never know whether it’s an “agree to disagree” or “let’s try to understand each other, I’m left of center” liberal or a woke leftist. The question is usually answered quickly when they say “something that is non-negotiable for me is BLM”.
As far as dating goes, politics shouldn’t be as big of a deal as they are. But since everyone is so extreme about it, it’s made me more extreme about it too. What wouldn’t have been a dealbreaker people some time ago has evolved into there being so many nonstarters that it’s very difficult to find anyone to even get to know. If I meet someone who is good at conversation or we share a lot of hobbies I tend to want to get to know them, but in the back of my mind I’m always thinking “please don’t be an extremist” and am trying to figure them out politically.
I think you're right that personal politics has become a much bigger deal in dating. The spectrum has just gotten so large. Those differences can really be insurmountable on key issues.
Hope you find a good match for you soon (if you're looking)!
I knew politics was important. I was a libertarian at the time (Harry Browne 2000! WTFWIT?) so I choose a libertarian. She support guns and freedom, and see through the covid shit, but I'm forced to hear fuckin' JoJo speeches and how illegals should be allowed in willy nilly.
Still, it's many times better than what my buddies endure with their leftist wives.
