On that note. I recently discovered that a box fan aimed point blank at a hanging wet towel makes for a great makeshift evaporative cooler. After about a minute the towel becomes cold, and then all the air hitting it gets cooled off too.
Then you can just re-wet the towel as needed.
My portable AC has been shutting down in the hottest part of the day due to overheating.
This little trick assists the air conditioning enough that it doesn't over heat, and provides a noticeable difference in temps.

If you're a real evap cooler nerd, you'd rig up a pump and nozzle drip system to keep the towel from drying out.
