It's illegal to run away from the scene of a crime with certain exceptions. There are plenty of people who got jailtime for defensive shootings and going home to take a nap afterwards before calling the police. I'm not sure what legal system you've been living under where you think you can kill someone and not report it to the police. In certain states, you may be liable if you simply witness a shooting/car wreck and walk away without saying anything.
