Homicide detectives can consult with the DA and decide if it's self-defense. They don't have to charge him to determine if it's self-defense. Looks they're jumping to conclusions again and the only thing the kid will have to worry about is the gun charge.

They can, but that usually only happens if it's clear what happened. If there's any argument to be had, there's a good chance you'll have to argue it in court rather than have the charges be dropped.

Exactly, some cases are super obvious

Like guy breaks into your home and you shoot him, that’s pretty obvious on self defense

If there’s reasonable doubt in the moment I can understand arresting someone while you figure it out

It’s death, not petty property theft so it’s usually better to err on the side of public safety and keep a possible murderer off the streets until more info can come out
