This was entirely self defense, no questions about it.

I looked up the WI open carry laws, and the sources say you must be 18, however the state of Wisconsin accepts and allows the gun being transported from Illinois, and the license from IL. Can any pedes help me figure out if he would be in trouble for not being 18 and opening carrying in WI?

You can't get a FOID card in Illinois until 18 now.

What a second, I just read that if you're under the age of 21 in IL, you can get an FOID on the state police website

Quote: "Yes. In addition to all other requirements, a person who is under 21 years of age must have the written consent of his or her parent or legal guardian to possess and acquire firearms and firearm ammunition. Also, he or she must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor other than a traffic offense or adjudged delinquent. The parent or legal guardian providing written consent must be eligible to possess a valid FOID card."

Federal law preempts State law. The Federal definition of Militia starts with able-bodied men age 17 who state their intent. There is video showing him saying he is with a militia. Pretty open and shut there.
