At the height of the surge in Iraq there were only around 40,000 trigger pullers in the Army, the rest is combat support. While the support from our nation to our Vets is really appreciated, and awe inspiring at times, its silly to assume everyone who dons the uniform is John Wayne. We do our best to break down and rebuild civies into proper soldiers, but like with any population it is filled with undesirables. The strain on our manpower from Clinton's downsizing was tough, and without a draft it meant we had to give a lot of dirtbags and fatbodies a pass unfortunately to maintain numbers, which often means shifting them from a combat role (if they were in one) to an office job. Obama really did a number on the upper echelon leadership as well which certainly did not help.

I think we had close to 160,000 at one time just in Iraq, so for 40k combat arms it took another 120k just to support them.
