I respectfully disagree. There are some hard core hunters out there with some transferable skills to combat, stalking, marksmanship, general endurance of the suck, but here's the majority of hunters...
They rely on gadgets and advanced techniques to track and kill animals unable to defend themselves. Some dont even get out of their car (I'm in the northwest, unfortunately some guys just cruise down trails and take shots if there's a deer by the road). Those guys probably havent taken much shots outside of the prone, or with an elevated heart rate, or have to reload and quickly land a controlled pair center mass at 50 yards.
Winning wars doesnt just require guns and people that can use them, it requires task organization, manuever coordination, logistical support, and now more than ever technology. 15 million hunters would raise hell, but dont be complacent and think they would be an actual deterrent in a long term engagement gainst drones with IR capabilities (you can buy them online, so believe me China and Iran and everyone else have them) and well supported enemy elements maneuvering on them with legit fires and cas.
A unified population that harbors love for its nation (some say nationalism, I say patriotism) is a more legit deterrent. They would be willing to plug in logistical and technical gaps for a hypothetical guerrilla movement and would never comply with a foreign occupier.
Guerilla warfare is more effective than you’re giving credit for.
Urban combat is notoriously nasty and negates many advantages armies have in manpower and tech.

They aren’t your friends and they generally don’t like you. They also rarely stop crimes or protect people. Generally they show up well after the incident and collect information or help coordinate the aftermath. That’s not their fault - it’s just that people don’t usually choose to commit crimes within earshot or the police.
I respect them for doing a difficult and often very unpleasant job that needs to be done in a lawful society. But I don’t blindly support them.
