He shouldn't. Its a clear case of self defense, but we'll see how the courts go. Kid may face some kind of charge for possessing a rifle at 17 though.

Unfortunately yes it is. Must be 18 to carry a long gun in WI... Hopefully the jury will do the right thing and nullify any charges brought.

State law supersedes. Same reason states have all kinds of laws more restrictive than Fed.

My mistake, phrased that poorly. Possessing a long gun isn't illegal, but rather the purchase of one. The question of who purchased the rifle will undoubtedly come up, and make no mistake, they will attempt to charge that person with something.
