Running your own primary DNS isn't hard, just above the tech level of most average non-enthusiast computer users. Anyone that knows linux shouldn't have much problem setting it up.
I have my own running on my local firewall/utility server, it's handy for a lot of things, like blacklisting Microsoft phone-home domains.
