Fuck plates. The first thing we did on patrols was unload from the hummer and ditch our plates. If we brought them in the first place. They are heavy and impede movement. Learn to fight, learn to shoot, be disciplined and learn to follow orders from someone who is a better fighter than you. that is how you stay alive in a fire fight. Not by being able to take hits center mass
You know a lot of guys agree with both of us. And by guys I mean grunts. I know they are just opinions but when I want to move fast, I don't need 20lbs+++ of extra shit when I need to move. We did have a couple of guys wear the stuff, It was their call. But when given the choice, the vast majority of us preferred to go out naked. And I suspect that had you been given a choice you too would have opted out. Maybe armor is much better and lighter than it was 10 years ago. but probably not.
I am a flv and my stinking hot blouse kind of guy.
Ond of the squad leaders in my battalion got royally destroyed because they left their plates in the tent and their company gunny found them. Granted, the sop for patrolling were the interceptor/ spartan 2s; i dont remember the name, but we replaced the old jacket style with them in 08. We were also given plate carriers but i heard only one platoon used them.
Edit: messed up on the names. The interceptor was the old jacket style, and the mtv was the replacement. Not sure where i got spartan 2s from tbh but i thought they were called that.

Obviously they help if hit. common consensus is they make you more likely to take a hit. Buy soft armor and a helmet.
