Heres a contrarian view: the kid who killed the criminals didnt have anything, if he did have a plate carrier, mag pouches, ifak, etc would he have been able to move and roll around and aim fast enough? We've seen the pics where the felons glock was a few inches from the kids face.
However, i personally have a plate carrier n such as well (no helmet though, or rather, yet). Level iiia is for up to 44 magnum, thats soft armore. Level 4 plates can take one 30.06 armor piercing round. I have front and back level 4 plates, level iiia soft armor on the sides. I got stupid lucky last month and got a shellback banshee version 1 plate carrier with level 4 rifle plates for $450. The side armor was another $180.
Safelife defense is coming out with a flexible body armor that can handle ar15 and ak47 rounds, but its 1600 bucks on sale/ presale. This is expensive stuff, but it will save your life.
