How much would these peaceful lacerations hurt? Obviously they look painful as fuck but I can't say I've ever experienced a large cut like that, I know paper cuts and small cuts sting for a while, but what would a massive wound like this even feel like?
In a perfect Hindsight Scenario, Blake would either have complied and NOT gotten his ass beaten and shot, or he would have NOT stolen and attacked anyone and never had a record, or the officers would have aimed better and we'd be done with the scumbag.

There's no reason an officer should have to accept such an unnecessary risk if they have other options (like shooting the assailant).

Sometimes the suspect is so high they feel no pain from being tased or smashed with a baton and they keep coming, sometimes they're just crazy ass strong and full of adrenaline and no non-lethal is going to stop them from taking your head off.
All the cop can do is try to keep a reasonable distance and try to react in time to neutralize the threat before it's too late and the suspect kills them.
Considering a cop is putting themselves in harms way by confronting the suspect, sometimes multiple times a day, why is it even remotely feasible to expect they open themselves up to MORE risk by trying to deal gingerly with a suspect that in a split second can easily murder them?

a. Did the cop apply life saving techniques after the shooting?
b. Why did the police shoot so many times?
c. Why didn't the police "just shoot him in the leg"?

A person with a knife is an assassin. He can close the distance and kill you before you even think to pull your gun and fire.
