You're missing the point. NO CRIME is like another. Each case is different with different circumstances.
Everything is public record anyway. It's patently unfair to single out one type crime over another. However, if ANY crime should be published and the felon made to wear a "Scarlet Letter" for the rest of their lives, it should be murderers.
As an example, juvenile crimes are NOT public record so should that policy be changed as well? Should 14 year olds have their criminal records made public so it can follow them the rest of their lives?
Here is an article that explains it much better than I can. Vigilante justice is one reason that a sex offender should not be forced to register for the rest of their lives. There should be a cut-off date that if they have remained law abiding for a certain amount of time, they should no longer be forced to register. It's the same thing as being in jail, except without the bars and guards.
Registry means that your neighbors are INFORMED about your past.
Public record means they have to know your full name and look it up themselves if they are so inclined.
It's a lot easier to judge someone when a text is sent to your phone with all the particulars of their criminal past, than to get to know them, find out they are decent people and then take it upon yourself to delve into their public records.
Imagine a sex offender who has never committed another crime, marries and has children, a decent job, and becomes a productive member of society. Then vigilantes invade his home and in the process hurts and/or kills his wife and children. Or burns down the house with his wife and kids in it. Is it fair to the people who live with a convicted sex offender to have their address publicly identified as such? Should a sex offender never be able to lead a normal life again?
Fucking of course not and I’m not making that argument, clearly. You still have not told me the difference between registering and crimes being public record. Ive been clear that I don’t understand and am legitimately seeking clarification and you continue to throw out these hypotheticals. I was literally just trying to understand this situation at a deeper level but I’m not going to run in circles and continue having to ask the same question and get another what if about speeding or someone burning a house down followed by “is it fair?!”
I’m not saying it’s fair, I’m trying to understand how it happens regarding something I’m clearly not familiar with.
When someone is convicted of a sex crime, regardless if they are 18 and had a relationship with a 15 or even 16 year old, or if they are 40 years old and molests 6 year olds, they are required to register every 6 months with the local sheriff at every address they move to for the rest of their lives.
Periodically, texts are sent out to neighbors telling them who the sex offenders are in their neighborhoods. There are also sites you can go to that shows all the sex offenders in a certain zip code.
The problem is there is no clarification as to whether it's a 50 year old pedophile who has offended countless times, or a one-time offender that was convicted as a teenager.
Anyone can pull up a criminal's record for theft, DUI, etc. on sites like "mugshot.com" if you already know their name.
Because no other crime is punished after the sentence has been completed. Registering as a sexual offender is requiring someone to report to the state for the rest of their lives despite completing the punishment given by the courts.
Could you imagine paying your speeding ticket but being forced to send a letter to all your neighbors telling them that even though the ticket was paid, you still might speed again in the neighborhood?
Other crimes are absolutely punished after the sentence is finished. Felons lose rights for life and have difficulties getting housing and apartments.
What punishment, outside of being on a registry, do sex offenders continue to have that other felons don’t? And if everything is public record then why does it matter if they’re on a registry or not? I’m genuinely wondering
Telling their neighbors- is there anything else I’m missing? Just send the letter. For the record I support making murderers/arsonists/battery-ists? do that too. I’m with you that sex offenders shouldn’t be singled out for that
It would be no different than you getting caught shoplifting and for the rest of your life, once a month your face would appear on the news reminding the public of what you did. If not for the media publishing your face, not everyone would know you were a thief. It's a scarlet letter. Should adulterers be forced to wear an "A" on their clothing the rest of their lives? The Nazis forced Jews to wear a Star of David on their clothing because they painted the Jews as criminals. Are you a Christian? If so, then you understand the process of forgiveness of sin. Society has deemed criminals to be "rehabilitated" after finishing their sentences, but can anyone be rehabilitated when they have others constantly pointing the finger at them after they've reformed? it's not just about informing the public. It's whether a teen can redeem themselves by the time they're 30 or 35 without the shame of one mistake following them forever.

Yeah- I certainly understand the point that each crime has its own circumstance, but you’re right that I fail to see the relevance.
If it’s all public record then what difference does it make if that person is also on a registry?

Please... please answer this question. I’ve asked it several times. Please because I obviously cannot wrap my head around it.
