Other crimes are absolutely punished after the sentence is finished. Felons lose rights for life and have difficulties getting housing and apartments.
What punishment, outside of being on a registry, do sex offenders continue to have that other felons don’t? And if everything is public record then why does it matter if they’re on a registry or not? I’m genuinely wondering
Telling their neighbors- is there anything else I’m missing? Just send the letter. For the record I support making murderers/arsonists/battery-ists? do that too. I’m with you that sex offenders shouldn’t be singled out for that
It would be no different than you getting caught shoplifting and for the rest of your life, once a month your face would appear on the news reminding the public of what you did. If not for the media publishing your face, not everyone would know you were a thief. It's a scarlet letter. Should adulterers be forced to wear an "A" on their clothing the rest of their lives? The Nazis forced Jews to wear a Star of David on their clothing because they painted the Jews as criminals. Are you a Christian? If so, then you understand the process of forgiveness of sin. Society has deemed criminals to be "rehabilitated" after finishing their sentences, but can anyone be rehabilitated when they have others constantly pointing the finger at them after they've reformed? it's not just about informing the public. It's whether a teen can redeem themselves by the time they're 30 or 35 without the shame of one mistake following them forever.
Ok. I asked a very specific question and again with all these other things appealing to emotion 😒
There was some objective information I wanted- I was trying to be informed, not make an argument either way. I’m not saying any of that is right, and I agree there was a lot of fucked up stuff about it. But everytime I ask for clarifying info (not accusing anyone of anything) I get this. I just wanted to further my understanding by getting info about objective questions. Have a good one.
Then please STOP giving me these other things about speeding, Nazis, adultery, Whatever
I understand that part of it and I don’t need the metaphors. It is really taking away from our discussion about the objective information.
Yeah it’s bullshit to list their addresses and put them and anyone at that address in danger. I think that is a Bad and unfair idea. I didn’t know that the registry had that and public records don’t. That is something I disagree with.
I get the whole “following you the rest of your life thing”. I have compassion for anyone in that situation and that absolutely sucks. However, I feel like that is less important than people having access to their addresses. I read the article you linked and it’s thoroughly awful. My concern is less the stigma and more the safety. TO BE CLEAR i am not saying the stigma is not an issue. Just saying that I agree with you from the perspective of safety over that.

I'm trying to explain it the best I can.
