There's a philosophical reason for not uttering the word "God" in that the concept of "God" is truly unknowable to a mere mortal and it is in a sense idolatry to even speak the name.

There’s a reason I write “G_d” instead of spelling it out entirely: It is forbidden to erase His Name, so I refrain from spelling it out where someone might print it and subsequently erase or deface it.
(Not that those three letters are His actual Name, but we still do that.)
