There's a philosophical reason for not uttering the word "God" in that the concept of "God" is truly unknowable to a mere mortal and it is in a sense idolatry to even speak the name.
I'm not religious but I enjoy studying such things.

It's meant as respectful piety, or at least it started that way. It goes back before weaponized 20th century style atheism.
I mean you're entitled to that opinion. Notice that I didn't shy away from typing it out, so claiming that I just "prescribe to what I'm told" comes off as a little flat.
As a non-religious person myself it's always a bit amusing when "godly" people claim to have a full grasp over something that they will also claim is all-powerful, omnipresent, and all-knowing. Pride much?

There’s a reason I write “G_d” instead of spelling it out entirely: It is forbidden to erase His Name, so I refrain from spelling it out where someone might print it and subsequently erase or deface it.
(Not that those three letters are His actual Name, but we still do that.)
