I never took the blue pill. I thought I was democrat in college because I didn't pay much attention to politics and my friend (who did) told me I was democrat, so I went along with it. I still tried to vote for who I wanted, regardless of party.
Turns out, once I actually looked in to politics, I was as conservative as they come. What red pilled me was a friend of mine complaining how much she hated the racist tea party. So, I actually looked at why she would say that, and what the tea party was. Turns out, I was for every single thing they were fighting for.
It was that moment (about 8 years after college) where I realized I've always been a Republican. After just a little bit of studying on politics... I am, and always have been, a hard-core Constitutional Conservative (which, I would say, is as 'in the middle' as possible).

This is why the Democrats are called 'the party of government' and why the APA (Administrative Procedure Act) preserves their power. Well, I think it was Fillmore who established the unelected 'non-partisan' bureaucracy. I do not know enough about constitutional law to know if it was ever challenged, but if so, it obviously prevailed meaning it's part of precedent.
There have been unelected officials since Washington, and this has grown over time. The cabinet positions are delegates of the President's executive powers, and those who work under the secretaries are further delegated those powers.
And all of that is fine. What has changed is that this now sprawling government has entrenched itself to the point it answers to nobody and assumes powers that are only constitutionally granted to the President.
And I don't think any administration has really challenged it. The trigger to a constitutional battle will be attempting to clean out departments. It's a major key to "draining the swamp".
