I know Breonna Taylor turned out not to be the sainted angel she was claimed to be, but I can still be against no-knock warrants right?
Because fuck those.
I don't care if you think they're too heavily armed to capture safely. If that's the case, surround the property, shut off the water and power and just wait em out.
I agree about no knock warrants, but despite having one the police actually did knock in the Breeona Taylor situation, as confirmed by her drug dealing boyfriend.
Part of the problem is that it's a bit of misnomer.
A normal warrant, you knock on the door. You wait. The person answers the door, you present the warrant. Then you enter.
What if you don't answer? While policy varies from state to state, there is always a minimum amount of time you are required to wait and a minimum number of times you announce yourself before you proceed to the next step of using a ram or other tool to break in.
A "no-knock" warrant is literally banging on the door and shouting police AS you ram the door down. It's all over within seconds, for the specific purpose of disorienting and catching the people inside off-guard.
So yes, they knocked, but they obviously did NOT wait for the boyfriend to get up off the couch and answer the door. They did not provide enough time for someone to recognize the shouts of "Police" and realize the people coming in were law enforcement and not burglars.
That's the difference between normal and "no-knock" warrants, and the latter is just a horrible and stupid idea that risks causing far too many misunderstandings and hasty reactions that lead to deaths on both side.
