Their counter argument that a large city is somehow supposed to be more dangerous / have more crime is ridiculous too.
Tokyo is one of the largest cities on the planet and it is incredibly safe. Nobody even steals anything. I once dropped at 100 yen coin at Lawsons and the cashier literally saved it in a fucking sealed baggie and gave it to me 2 days later because they recognized me.
Tokyo is crazy. I can leave my bike ($2000 Cyclocross bike) outside unlocked in central Tokyo and no-one will touch it. Back home that would be taken immediately, even if you put D-Locks on it.
People leave their phones on coffee shop tables as they make an order... those would be taken too.
I dropped my wallet, went to the police station and got a call the next morning. My wallet was handed in -- with all the cash still in it.
