I think his head was just grazed. Some reports floating he was shot 4 times, a forehead graze, leg, hand, and in the back which punctured lung and ultimately killed him.
One theory is his friend that was running behind him had a gun. He tried to shoot Kyle, missed and hit and killed his buddy.
