He had a public defender in Illinois who was involved in the proceeding that returned him to Wisconsin, but other than that, there has been no confirmation that an attorney has been engaged or appointed to represent him for the criminal charges in Wisconsin.

The family hasn't approved anything. If they had, they would put out a statement directly to the media. Or an attorney who is listed in court documents as formally representing Kyle would put out a statement directly to the media.

If you gave money to this scam, demand it back. I expect you'll get it. If you used a credit card, file a complaint immediately with the card issuer and you almost certainly get the charge cancelled pending investigation, and whoever is on the receiving end won't challenge your claim and that will be the end of the investigation.
