If we had not defunded the space program, we would have been on Mars in 1980. We would, by now, have bases on both the Moon and Mars, and multiple large space stations orbiting Earth, the Moon, and Mars.
And likely be further along technologically then we can comprehend. The first space mission changed the planet.

The earth based mass driver was estimated only $11 Billion total which should have been able to launch 1000 Kg Telephone size launch template vehicles which could be done every 1.5 minutes(realistically likely every 3-5 minutes) which would be 12 at the lowest to 40 at the highest every hour(960 in a 24 hour period) at $100-$400 per kilogram. We could have had a space station like the Standford Taurus Wheel by now. If gone by todays money it could cost around $40 Billion-$60 Billion and it would still pay for itself after 4-6 years at 200 launches/day with only 132 working days.
The rocket fuel right now is made up of Super cooled Liquid Oxygen(LOX) and Liquid Hydrogen can be manufactured enmass from mining the moon for the Oxygen, and the hydrogen can be gained by using gasses that absorb Hydrogen and having the hydrogen being flung out from the sun using magnetic coning into the gasses(the last part is still hypothetical but it is based on the way gas reaches stars using magnetic lanes).
It would have cost us $400 Billion to complete that type of station using this method in total. The method though still has some problems, but the solutions to them are actually very doable since it was all based on 1980 tech. meaning that we have the material and know how now to make more efficient and stable versions of it through simulations to help refine it a little.

We can do that on mars and the moon, but earth itself is quite literally too much of a gravity well to get that much mass for cheap.
For the moon it is doable, but to get there cheaply this method should be first before going to it.
As for Mars it should be after the first two are done mainly because it could provide materials Cheaply and building the Most important section(the top) in space so that going downwards is a lot easier to transport them to the upper parts until the bottom part is done so that when they link it would only be connecting. The fact that the cable could be disconnected from the top would add a safety feature as well, or vice versa depending if that link is being pulled up to get it away from the Tower zone(Elevator zone).

Mercury and Venus would be really hard to land people on. By really hard, I mean impossible with any foreseeable technology. Any flag would burn. That's not a good image.
Mercury is basically impossible to reach an orbit around, just from the delta-v required. We would need a fundamental change to the way we propel rockets to make it viable.
Unfortunately, KSP has rocket performance set ridiculously high vs what it is in the real world. The mods that give the real solar system and realistic rockets are a kick in the nuts.

Mars has potential for humans to inhabit and become a second earth. Going to take some time. A lot of time but it’s possible. Not so much with the moon. Moon also has way less gravity.
Mars has only 36% of Earth’s gravity and holes in its magnetic field due to its core having gone cold, the latter means it can’t retain any atmosphere or water that isn’t ice. There really aren’t any habitable bodies in our solar system aside from earth.

One reason is for public support. Saying "we're going to another planet/Mars" is more impressive than "we're going to the moon". Even though a permanent colony on the moon would be the logical first step, sometimes you can only do what the public will be willing to support.
In saying that, NASA does have a plan for a permanent orbital station around the moon, which is kind of the best of both worlds. Having the infrastructure and proximity of a lunar station will be invaluable and likely critical to a future Mars mission, but you can still market it to the public by saying it's for Mars.
At this point I don't care what they do just so long as we get more stuff into space. Ultimately space exploration is the only thing that matters. The sooner we're a multiplanetary species the better.
It's a huge stretch goal for space, and it gets us working on interplanetary travel which can (hopefully) lead to an advance that will make interstellar travel feasible.
If we ever colonize Mars, we will either have to gatekeep the shit out of it, or send all of the communist fucks there to live out their fantasy while the rest of us keep Earth.

i mean maybe in 2120 it will be feasible but all of our manned missions should be focused on establishing operations on the moon. not only will this allow us to test and prepare for long term missions but gives us a perfect low energy launching base for deep system exploration.
theres easily harvested energy on the moon and if something goes wrong there is a far greater chance that a rescue mission will be able to save lives when travel is only days as opposed to weeks.
