Edit: Oh yeah, my main point: In order to do this vertical spelling, it requires careful variation of the propellant charges and launcher aim, which is an impressive skill on the part of the fireworks technicians. Editing this out of the live coverage is an insult to these people far more than it is to Trump.
Modern fireworks are launched with a pneumatic system for more precise height and timing control. There's no more waiting for fuses, pressure build up, etc, let the computer open the valve following a precise pattern for a needed flight profile and off it goes. The burst timing is also controlled using a chip in the shell instead of a fuse.
Disney has been using such systems for 15 years.
I doubt they're using chips in little stars like that, and they have to be already exposed to the air and lit. We are talking about the stars that spell "TRUMP / 2020" vertically; they didn't burst. Also, it looks like an EFU malfunctioned in the last 30 seconds of the show, did you spot it?

The whole show is about 6 minutes and is linked elsewhere in the comments under this clip. About 30 seconds from the end of it, a rather huge liftoff occurs across the left three quarters of the array according to the usual camera angle, and after that's done, the last bouquet on the right continues to operate for the last 25 seconds or so of the show. It's no San Diego 2012, but kinda reminded me of it.
Star ignition will be chip based if you want high reliability and timing precision. Spelling a name during the show? You bet those were chipped.
It sure looks like they were lit before they left the tubes. These things don't have flat luminosity profiles, I know that much. Could you please do me the courtesy of providing a source or vendor link on these chipped stars you're talking about? I know more about model/HP rockets myself, and from those, the flight electronics are normally recovered - and those electronics seem far too expensive to expend in a firework explosion. I also know they still use fuse trains in explosive building demolition. So, without having done a search myself, I would already be rather surprised if you could back up your claim.

Disney World could get their chips with an acceleration sensor, a safety (induction loop at the muzzle of each mortar tube would be my choice, buy once, cry once), timer, battery, and screw terminals for the ignition source for about a buck given the tens of thousands they would order at a time.
Here's the patent for Disney's system, it has been expired for 8 years so now anyone can design their own chips, send the PCB design off-shore and get back a box of them in 90 days.
Bursting a shell isn't the only use, lighting a star is another.

In its most general form, the equation is "$ = T + U * N" - your statement puts 'N' (quanitity; _n_umber of units) after a '^' by definition, and that doesn't happen. The other letters are for _t_ooling (costs of development, masks if you aren't wearing out enough of them to put in U, and usually a fixed fee from the fab for the production batch) and _u_nit cost.
Second, Disney World is firing off the same fireworks show every night while you have an RNC such as this every four years. This means you have ballpark 1400 Disney fireworks show (more if the different parks don't have different shows, I don't know - but I do know who to ask, lol.) So, all the Disney fireworks expertise is amortized over all these shows, while these tricks at the RNC were done for one show. Even if they did it exactly as you describe, which I very much doubt, it would still be impressive. Whether they are electronically controlled pneumatic launchers (and there is probably such a thing as mechanically controlled pneumatic launchers because $four-figure PCP air rifles still don't have any electronics in them) or a guy measuring black powder with a scale, the engineering for vertically spelling "TRUMP / 2020" is not trivial.
Finally, if you want to posit that it is trivial, and thus insult Trump's fireworks technicians, what are you doing on this website in the first place?

I have loved fireworks since I was a kid. The louder the better. I watched in total jealousy of all the people that got to see that amazing show live.
My favorites are the very small flashes they use as filler during finales. Smallest flash and biggest boom. Usually shoot them in rapid succession. Whatever those are called are the best.

I was watching this portion of the RNC on NPR as the Fox feed froze on my TV. The female announcer casually mentioned that there were fireworks and the scene cut to the exponentially expanding fireworks display. At that point, the TRUMP 2020 lit up the sky and the announcer says before catching her persona: " oh OHHH!" and repeats again when the TRUMP 2020 flashed a second time.

I wish I could have seen them in person. Heck, I wish I'd let my kid stay up to see them. While this is the part we all remember, something about the way the fireworks started really got to me. If I could make a comparison...it was like when you get to that certain point of a JRPG that the skills/attacks get more and more spectacular. The fireworks were shooting up in a way that created patterns on the ground. It was like watching magic.
