Not a novel. A true crime type history book, written in the 1920s. And the book was more a broad inspiration than a specific basis for the movie. They are quite different but both interesting.

It was a cult classic when I was in college in the early 1980s. It's been criticized for being heavily embellished and gossipy. But so is Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," and that's still a classic too. 👌

Gibbon is such a fuck and that book makes me so mad. Tons of great information but the areas of willful blindness are so infuriating.
Name checks out. It's a good read. Gossipy, but I enjoy that. Like any history it's fruitful to dive deeper and read multiple sources, see who has criticized it and why and whether it was justified, and always go back to original source documents when possible.
I never saw that movie. I'm not a big city person and their goings on don't interest me much... but I just finished the Poisoners Handbook about the History of Forensics in America and how it mainly grew in New York. Pretty Fascinating.
