This article at first glance has an answer, but the author's description is pretty vague. Does he not understand the importance of those sequence of events, or is he just playing everyone? I find it all awfully suspicious.
The author doesn’t mention that the dead sex offender attacked Kyle, throwing an object at him. From the sequence of events he does describe he almost certainly saw that as well but he omitted it.
